Considerato il Godfather della street art Xavier Prou aka Blek Le Rat con circa sessant’anni di vita rappresenta l’iniziatore “silenzioso” della graffiti e stencil art. Mentre Banksy cominciava con i primi muri a NYC lui aveva già conquistato il mondo! Partendo dalla Francia dopo una laurea in arte e architettura era approdato alla Grande Mela nei primi anni ’70 ed era letteralmente rimasto sconvolto dall’energia creativa che si sviluppava nella metropolitana, come cita su Forbes: “I was so impressed it took me 10 years to digest what I saw”.
Il 20 gennaio grazie alla Wunderkammern Gallery arriva in Italia per la prima volta con la mostra “Propaganda” che esporrà i suoi lavori più celebri ma anche stencil e piccole sculture, e soprattutto per incontrare un pubblico desideroso di confrontarsi con uno dei capostipiti delle più importanti correnti artistiche dell’ultimo secolo!
L’arte di strada negli anni ’80 e le gallerie. Oggi le dinamiche sono cambiate o resta il gap? Street art in the ‘80s and the art galleries.
Today the dynamics are changed or the gap still continues?
The dynamic of the street art movement is hundred time stronger than it was in the 80’s. In that time (80’s) street art did not have the impact on people that it has now all over the world. In the 80’s it was more confidential and only a small group of people was involved in this kind of expression. This movement is still developing in a huge manner and it would be difficult to live in a city where no street art could be found. Everyday new pieces are created on the walls of cities worldwide. The number of street artists working all over the world cannot be counted such it is massive.
Sei stato un anticipatore e l’hai fatto a volto scoperto. Condividi l’ampio aspetto che Banksy (e il suo collettivo) dedica al marketing virale? Credi si possa integrare con l’arte?
You have been a pioneer and you have been that with the face uncovered. Do you agree with the big attention that Banksy (and his group) dedicates to viral marketing? Do you think it can be integrated with art?
Of course it can be integrated in the street art movement and the art movement in its full development.

La propaganda oggi sembra avere un’affinità elettiva con le attuali piattaforme social. Parlaci del tuo rapporto con i nuovi mezzi.
Propaganda today seems to have an affinity with the current social platforms. Can you tell us about your relationship with the new medias?
I use a lot the new medias to make my own propaganda that I can control at 100%. It is important to control what’s going on several time in a day in the new medias, I think all artists do it. The impact of social medias is huge for us, we can’t imagine an artist life without the web.
