Frame Moooi Award 2012.

Frame Moooi Award

Frame Moooi Award 2012. Shortlist Announcement
The year’s biggest inaugural interior design award, hosted by Frame and Moooi, will be concluding in Milan during April’s Salone del Mobile fair.
With the goal of finding the best custom-made lamp or furnishing designed for a specific interior, the international award was launched in mid-2011.
A whopping 891 submissions were received via framemoooi.com, by designers in 79 countries. At an award ceremony on 18 April, the winning project will be revealed and its designer will receive the €25,000 grand prize. The award’s juror, internationally celebrated designer Philippe Starck, has selected the top 10 finalists and will personally announce the winner in Milan. Starck selected the finalists with an anonymous approach, in that he didn’t know the designers’ names or countries of origins. ‘I’m often invited to judge competitions,’ Starck says. ‘I’m happy to say that the level of this one is clearly higher than average, a very nice surprise.’

The finalists are:
• Ray – integrated ceiling light for an office, by Shl Design (Denmark)
• What’s in your locker? – locker system for a school, by Lab 3 (Netherlands)
• Caelum – LED table lamp for a bar, by Pablo Martinez Diez (Spain)
• Kroon – chandelier for an office and apartment building, by ZMIK (Switzerland)
• Shoe Box – display system for a sneaker shop, by Facet Studio (Australia)
• Mist of Arch – furniture for public toilet in a department store, by Keiko + Manabu (Japan)
• Sketch – display for a fashion shop, by Ypsilon Tasarım, Yesim Bakırküre (Turkey)
• Stairway to Heaven – pendant light for a theater café, by Bertjan Pot (Netherlands)
• Education Trestles and Easels – educational table system for an art museum, by Studio Makkink & Bey (Netherlands)
• Decanterlight – pendant light for a bar, by Lee Broom (United Kingdom)

As per award rules, the finalists’ products can all lead a life outside the interior for which they were designed.
The award ceremony will be held on Wednesday, 18 April at Magazzini Generali (Via Pietrasanta 16, 20124 Milan), by invitation only. A press preview will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the ceremony and party set to commence at 9:30 p.m.
The party, which is themed Celebration to LIGHT!, will be hosted by Michele Caniato (President, Culture & Commerce) and include a special installation by artist Daniel Wurtzel. At the ceremony, the 10 finalists will be presented by designer Marcel Wanders and Philippe Starck will crown the winner.

The award was launched in 2011 with the goal to unite innovative interiors with equally as innovative furniture and lighting. Many high-profile pieces of furniture and lighting have been designed for a specific context, such as Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair, which was created for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona or Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair designed in 1958 for the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen. These and many other iconic products eventually experienced large-scale production and appeared in a wide range of interior projects. Many proved to be so innovative that they earned recognition and inspired others to design similar models. Contextual designs are clearly important for the development of furniture and lighting; they also strengthen the bond between (interior) architects and product designers.

Philippe Starck
Courtesy of the Starck brand: Philippe Starck is an internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect. This untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet, creates unconventional places and objects whose purpose is to be ‘good’ before being beautiful.
Most of his designs have become cult objects, and his hotels are timeless icons that have added a new dimension to the global cityscape. An enthusiastic advocate of sustainability, this visionary recently developed the revolutionary concept of ‘democratic ecology’ by creating affordable wind turbines for the home, soon to be followed by innovative wooden prefabricated ecological houses and new energy boats. He lives with his wife Jasmine, mostly on an airplane, and between Paris, Burano and on his oyster farm in the southwest of France.
Frame
Frame is the world’s barometer of interior design. The magazine shows what’s happening and where to find it. The latest interiors and products, spiced up with some art, shop windows and sets, is the essence of Frame magazine. Frame gathers the most interesting works from around the world and packages it in six tactile issues a year. Since Frame believes that readers appreciate and enjoy the ability to ‘read’ images, the magazine focuses on photos and drawings. However, text is equally as important; Frame puts a lot of energy in uncovering the story behind each design. Loaded with nothing but the best in contemporary design, Frame is an inspiring and indispensable reference for professionals in interior design and other creative pursuits.
Moooi
For almost ten years Moooi has inspired and seduced the world with sparkling and innovative designs. The venture founded in 2001 by Marcel Wanders and Casper Vissers is named after their native Dutch word for beautiful – the third ‘o’ in the brand name stands for an extra value in terms of beauty and uniqueness. The core strengths of both men continue to complement each other perfectly; Marcel, the obstinate, passionate designer with a nose for business, and Casper, the driven marketeer with a keen eye for design.
In addition to Marcel Wanders’ designs, the Moooi portfolio contains a range of work from other nationally and internationally recognised designers. These include, amongst others, Jurgen Bey, Bertjan Pot, Maarten Baas, Jaime Hayon, Neri & Hu, Studio Job and Nika Zupanc. Marcel maintains an influence in all inclusions to the brand, being personally responsible for the overall design selection process. The collection style is exclusive, daring, playful, exquisite and based on the belief that design is a question of love.
